The purpose of the MPA Applied Research Problem and Oral Exam process is for students to demonstrate and further develop their public service leadership potential through a collection of academic and professional products. The applied research problem requires MPA students to apply concepts learned in their coursework to a realistic public sector problem or issue.
Applied Research Problem
The student is required to produce an independent applied research response to a faculty generated research problem that examines a managerial, policy, or administrative question of relevance. The student’s response serves as the thesis substitute requirement of the Graduate School, demonstrating active learning and problem-solving based on the following:
- Identify an applied research response to a faculty generated research problem;
- Conduct applied research, including a literature review, research design, and data collection;
- Analyze quantitative and qualitative data to produce meaningful findings; and
- Offer recommendations to address the research problem.
The Applied Research Problem Student Guide will give students additional information, guidance, and resources to begin thinking about and preparing for the Applied Research Problem process.
Oral Exam
The Applied Research Problem Oral Exam Guide will give students additional information, guidance, and resources to begin thinking about and preparing for the oral exam process.
