The MPA Professional Work Experience (PWE) is a required and essential component of the UNC-Master of Public Administration (MPA) curriculum. The PWE provides the opportunity to further refine knowledge, skills, and competencies developed through MPA coursework through experimentation and application within a public service work setting.
In certain circumstances, students with demonstrated, significant, professional experience may be eligible to apply to apply to receive a waiver from the PWE requirement.
To be Eligible for Waiver consideration:
- You must possess 5 or more years of post-undergraduate public service work experience and,
- Student must be currently working, and have worked for at least 3 months (to move beyond the onboarding period) in a full-time capacity, in a position and in an organization that qualifies for the PWE Practicum.
- Organizations that quality:
- Typically, governmental or nonprofit organizations*
- *unless otherwise approved by MPA Program Director
- Positions that qualify:
- Positions that benefit the public, working for the greater good of our communities
- Manage complex work
- Significant managerial or policy level work
- Demonstrated application of MPA learning and coursework to practice through their work experience via the required memo.
- Complete Waiver form and appendices of support
- Typically, governmental or nonprofit organizations*

In some situations, the benefits of completing a PWE may outweigh that of pursuing a waiver from the PWE requirement. It is encouraged that you speak with Allison Binkley to further explore whether pursuing a request for a PWE Waiver is the best choice for you.
To apply for the PWE waiver:
- The student must have successfully completed or currently enrolled in PUBA 709, PUBA 710, PUBA 719, PUBA 720, PUBA 721, and 1 of the following (PUBA 723, 731, or 760).
- Complete and submit the Professional Work Experience Waiver Petition to the Director of Career, Alumni, and Employer Engagement,, Allison Binkley.
- In addition to the PWE Waiver Petition form you’ll need to submit:
- A memo outlining how you have applied learning to practice in your work, and how your role meets the requirements of the PWE.
- A copy of your resume/CV which demonstrates your work and also meeting the requirements to apply for the waiver.

**The MPA Program Director reviews PWE Waiver petitions upon receipt, basing determination upon whether the student’s professional experience satisfies the purpose of the PWE requirement.
**Admitted students interested in applying for the PWE waiver may consult with the Director of Career, Alumni, and Employer Engagement, Allison Binkley, to discuss potential eligibility and likelihood to receive a waiver from the PWE requirement.
**All students who receive a PWE Waiver will still have to complete PUBA 747, Applied Research I.
**All Students who do not qualify or receive a waiver from the PWE requirement should plan to proceed with completion of the PWE requirement.
