Social Programming

Students are encouraged to take the lead for MPA social programming. Below are examples of organized social events that have been previously held. Students may also wish to informally organize outings and group gatherings.

Peer/Social Networking

Student-led happy hours

Bureaucrats’ Ball – opportunity to come together with fellow students, faculty and staff for a fun filled evening celebrating Public Administration!  This is a great opportunity to connect with others in the program. Organizers should follow the Bureaucrats Ball Planning Document, The MPA Event Planning Guide, and work closely with the Director of Academic Advising and Student Life on their Planning.

Student-led Initiatives

Students have led conversations and panels regarding topics of interest. While these may be housed in student organizations, they may also be organized as one-off events. Please coordinate with the MPA Program Office, as there may be relevant tie-ins with alumni or other constituents. The MPA Event Planning Guide should be followed.
Watch the recording to hear insights on the topic of the arts economy and recovery after Covid-19 from Dara Silver, the Senior Vice President of Community Engagement & Partner Relations with The Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County and Nate McGaha, the Executive Director of Arts North Carolina.

Alumni Networking

Happy Hour Hubs

Happy Hour Hubs are an initiative of the MPA Program Office and the Office of Development & Constituent Relations.

Several times throughout the year, happy hours will be sponsored in regions with a significant alumni and student presence. The purpose of these events is to bring together MPA alumni, current students, prospective students for either format, MPA faculty, and staff to connect with each other and the program.

Questions about Happy Hour Hubs, contact Brandon Foster , Director Annual Giving and Alumni Relations.

Kickoff Picnic

The kickoff picnic is an annual event sponsored by the MPA Alumni Association to welcome new on-campus and online students to the Carolina MPA family. Students and their families are invited to join fellow alumni, faculty, and staff for a picnic in Chapel Hill. More information here.
