Resources are also routinely highlighted in the MPA Digest. As it is by no means exhaustive, though, talk with Elizabeth Langefeld about what might benefit you personally. Academic Services:
Accommodations University Compliance Office (UCO) assists the University community with disability, pregnancy and religious accommodation requests, including auxiliary aids and services. UCO also offers training and consulting services to address any questions or accessibility needs. Accommodations for Religious Observances The UNC Dean of Students Office supports Tar Heels’ well-being, inside and outside the classroom. As part of your Carolina experience, they understand that you may need to balance your academic studies with observations of your religious practices and beliefs. ADHD & Learning Disabilities Support Learning differences and disabilities can make graduate school even more challenging. At the Learning Center, our Academic Coach specialists can help you successfully navigate UNC and access helpful resources whether you’ve been diagnosed or not. Schedule a one-on-one coaching appointment with our ADHD/LD specialists, join the ADHD/LD Peer Connect Group and attend an ADHD, ME, and UNC event, and check out our tips and resources. The Learning Center The Learning Center – study skills, time management techniques, academic coaching, tutoring, & more! Graduate students are invited to make same-day appointments. The Odum Institute for Social Science Research (data/statistics) The Odum Institute helps with data on your research projects. Virtual support and consulting opportunities are available. The Writing Center The Writing Center – submit your paper drafts online for help with organization of your ideas. UNC Libraries UNC Libraries – assistance with materials and research. Reporting Resources: Discrimination, Harassment, Sexual Violence, Interpersonal Violence, & Stalking Resources The MPA Program aims to support all students experiencing any form of discrimination, harassment, sexual violence, interpersonal violence and stalking. Your MPA staff have been through HAVEN Training (now Empower UNC Training) and all university employees are Responsible Employees obligated to report information disclosed to them. Shared information will be kept private, but not confidential, as an EOC report will need to be filed. Confidential emotional and psychological support is available through the UNC Gender Violence Prevention Coordinators, Campus Health, the University Ombuds Office, the Orange County Rape Crisis Center and Compass Center for Women and Families. The following resources are among those available to UNC students: How Students Can Be of Support: Financial Resources: The Cashier's Office The UNC Chapel Hill Cashier’s Office handles all payments, posts tuition rates, and has a variety of payment options available. Employee Waivers UNC Employee waiver processes may vary by school of origin, but payment information will need to go through the UNC-CH Cashier’s Office. Their website has further information. Carolina Financial Well-Being Center The Carolina Financial Well-Being Center offers inclusive financial education, supports basic needs, and empowers individuals to improve their financial well-being, ensuring success for future generations. Financial Literacy Resources Financial Literacy Resources from the UNC Office of Student & Scholar Aid, including access to CashCourse, an online financial education resource designed specifically for college and university students. Graduate Funding Information Center The UNC Graduate School includes the Graduate Funding Information Center, which focuses on helping students seek funding for independent research, collaborative projects, fellowships, program development, and other scholarly activities. Students are encouraged to subscribe to the Funding and Fellowships Fridays newsletter to learn of funding opportunities around the university, including Graduate Assistantship positions. Scholarships and Student Aid UNC Scholarships and Student Aid helps all students understand their financial aid options. Dedicated staff are available to work with graduate students. Wellness Services & Emergency Information: *Note: Some services are covered by student fees, which are charged to on-campus students but not online students. Services may vary. Basic Needs Basic Needs – Basic needs refers to the essential goods, utilities, services, or resources required on a regular basis that are needed to achieve and maintain physical and mental well-being. At the core, these include food security, housing security, and financial stability. The UNC Dean of Students Office believes that this is a holistic approach and may include health/medical care, technology, mental health resources, and other needs. To address the needs of the Carolina Community, the Basic Needs Task Force was charged with developing a university-wide initiative to help with these needs. The Task Force Web page has resources on: Black Mental Health Services Black Mental Health Resources – resources for students on and off campus Campus Health Campus Health – students paying health fees may access providers, refill prescriptions, etc. Campus Lactation Guide Campus Lactation Guide – Details rights and responsibilities, as well as a map of lactation rooms around campus Campus Recreation Campus Recreation – UNC offers 2 gyms for student use as well as well as fitness classes, intramural leagues, and more Carolina Cupboard Food Pantry Carolina Cupboard is a food pantry open to all on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill. Their main location is in 1221 SASB North and there is also a satellite location at the UNC Graduate School (Bynum Hall). Carolina Recovery Program Carolina Recovery Program – supports students in maintaining recovery from substance misuse Counseling and Psychological Services Counseling and Psychological Services – students paying health fees may access providers, also offers wellness tips and referrals. Also offers group counseling. It is recommended to sign up for therapy groups early in a term, as they can fill up quickly. Even if you find them later on, be sure to ask! Dean of Students Office The UNC Dean of Students Office provides individualized support that empowers Carolina Students to succeed in navigating their university experience. See details on their website to: Disaster Recovery When natural disasters occur, the Program and the Dean of Students Offices works to reach each impacted student and tailor resources to needs. Multicultural Health Program Multicultural Health Program has resources available via CAPS National Suicide Prevention Lifeline The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline provides 24/7, free and confidential support for people in distress, prevention and crisis resources for you or your loved ones, and best practices for professionals in the United States. Please don’t hesitate to call them at 988. Student Emergency Funds Student emergency funds assist Carolina students by providing financial support when they need assistance with unexpected, unforeseen, and unavoidable emergency expenses surrounding situations such as accidents, illness, death of a family member, fire damage or need for temporary housing. Currently enrolled students may apply for funds when they have exhausted all other resources (payment plans, additional student aid, assistance from family/friends, other personal resources). This funding is not intended to reimburse for expenses that have already been paid, to serve as a debt diversion program, or to replace or supplement existing financial aid. If funds are granted, they do not have to be repaid. There are three areas of funds available: Students may apply to more than one fund simultaneously to cover needs. Student Wellness Student Wellness is a health education and health promotion office whose work is rooted in public health science, with a focus on environmental change strategies. They offer wellness coaching, substance use services, and much more in both one on one and group settings. Other Recommended Resources: Carolina Center for Jewish Studies The Carolina Center for Jewish Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill unites the general public, students and faculty from various academic disciplines who share a common passion for a deeper understanding of Jewish history, culture and thought. Carolina Grad Student F1RSTS Carolina Grad Student F1RSTS supports first-generation graduate students. Carolina Latinx Center Carolina Latinx Center is a home for the Latinx community on campus, providing an outlet for events and a space for students to organize and for faculty to connect with students and the community at large. Carolina Student Legal Services Carolina Student Legal Services is a nonprofit law firm on campus serving UNC students in the areas of: Dean of Students Office The Dean of Students Office assists students in times of crisis or needing assistance. Administers the Student Emergency & Hardship Fund. Another good place to start if you aren’t sure of what resource you’ll need. They’ll be able to help you determine what’s available. Global Grads Global Grads provides resources for international graduate students Grad Student Diversity Grad Student Diversity hosts initiatives across campus for the success of the graduate student body, including first-generation students and more. Graduate & Professional Student Government Graduate & Professional Student Government -is the governing body of the 11,000 graduate and professional students at UNC-CH. Heel Life Heel Life is a repository of all student organizations at UNC-CH. Hello Heels Hello Heels is an app built for Tar Heels. It includes: Initiative for Minority Excellence Initiative for Minority Excellence (ICE) – focuses on the retention and successful graduation of racially/ethnically diverse graduate students. Military-Affiliated Grads Military-Affiliated Grads is focused on providing opportunities and resources to active duty, veteran, reservist, and National Guard graduate students. Military & Veteran Student Success (MVSS) Centerr The Military and Veteran Student Success (MVSS) Center supports veterans, active duty military, National Guard members, reservists, dependents, spouses, and ROTC cadets in their transition to student life. Off-Campus Student Housing Off-Campus Student Housing provides resources for students looking at housing in the Chapel Hill area, looking for roommates, etc. Queer Graduate & Professional Students (QGAPS) Queer Graduate & Professional Students (QGAPS) partners with the LGBTQ Center to provide opportunities for LGBTQIA-identified graduate students. The Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture & History The Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture & History encourages and supports critical examination of all dimensions of African-American and African diaspora cultures through sustained and open discussion, dialogue and debate, and enhances the intellectual and socio-cultural climate of UNC-CH and communities beyond campus boundaries. Student Parents Student Parents provides resources for pregnant and parenting UNC students; offers information on Child Care Scholarships and lactation rooms on campus. UNC Alma Mater & Other Songs UNC Alma Mater and Other Songs – learn them to cheer on the Tar Heels! UNC American Indian Center UNC American Indian Center bridges the richness of American Indian cultures with the strengths of Carolina’s research, education and service. UNC Asian American Center UNC Asian American Center – Through education, organizing, and advocacy, the AAC will engage and empower Asian American students, faculty, and staff and the greater Carolina community. UNC Black Student Movement (BSM) UNC Black Student Movement (BSM) – From BSM’s website: We, the members of the Black Student Movement, embrace a culture distinct from the dominant culture found at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In view of this fact, it is the goal of this organization to strive for the continued existence of the unity among all its members, to voice the concerns and grievances of its members to the University, to offer outlets for expressing Black ideals and culture, and finally, to ensure that the Black Student Movement members never lose contact with the Black community. UNC Campus Ministry Association UNC Campus Ministry Association – assists students on finding out more information about faith-based and religious opportunities in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Community. Resources include Christian, Hindu, Jewish and Muslim faiths. UNC LGBTQ Center UNC LGBTQ Center – works to foster a welcoming & inclusive environment for UNC community members of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions. UNC Muslim Student Association The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Muslim Students Association (UNC MSA) is a religious, social, and outreach student organization that aims to bring together the Muslim students on campus, and the greater Chapel Hill area, as well as serve as their voice in the community. MSA also reaches out for interfaith cooperation on campus and works with other organizations to bring about positive change at UNC. UndocuCarolina UndocuCarolina is a collaboration of UNC students, faculty, staff, and community members working to increase visibility, support, and resources for members of the Carolina community living with the effects of undocumentation.
